WRAP Launches Compost Benefits Guide for Farmers

11 February 2008

Farmers and growers can find out more about the benefits of quality compost, thanks to a new booklet launched today by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme).

The booklet, entitled Using Quality Compost to Benefit Crops, provides comprehensive information about the many benefits of using and applying quality BSI PAS 100 compost made from garden and food waste.

It also highlights the results of a variety of WRAP-sponsored scientific trials on the use of compost, including ones conducted on potatoes, wheat, barley and sugar beet on a number of farms across the country. These trials, which have been running since 2000, have found that compost offers numerous advantages, including a reduced need for inorganic fertilisers, increased crop yields and long-term improvements in soil structure.

Anne O’Brien, Key Account Manager for WRAP’s Organics programme, said: “As scientific trials continue to demonstrate the value of quality compost for the agricultural industry, we wanted to highlight these benefits to farmers and growers.

“We hope that this new booklet will provide a useful introduction to the concept of using compost as part of soil and nutrient management plans, and encourage more farmers to consider using this sustainable, locally available product.”
