WRAP joins forces with the Third Sector
WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) is today launching a new programme that will help increase third sector capacity on waste and resource management.
CEO Liz Goodwin is officially launching the partnership between WRAP and third sector Body Reconomy at the London Community Recycling Network Conference today (4 June). She will highlight the innovative character of the third sector and the belief that this will help alter the boundaries of how we think about resource efficiency. She will call on the sector to feedback to help ensure that the programme is effective and growth in capacity is sustainable.
She is expected to say:
"We know that real progress is best delivered in partnership.
"Over the next few years, my hope is that our collective work will continue to enable businesses and consumers alike to engage in actions to ensure more efficient use of our natural resources which in turn helps to combat climate change.
"The third sector has the passionate commitment, the vision and the energy to play a key role in this and in helping to ensure that the sector continues to grow and expand in future."
The intention to set up the Third Sector Capacity Building Programme was announced by Defra as part of the Department’s 2007 Waste Strategy. Defra will be allocating a total of £4 million over the next three years to fund WRAP’s work on the programme, including a £1.3 million spend in this financial year alone.
Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for the Environment is expected to say:
"We are all learning how to live more sustainably, and how we manage waste is an important part of this.
"Many third sector organisations already use imaginative approaches when it comes to waste prevention and I’m delighted to see the work that WRAP has put in to developing the Third Sector Capacity Building programme. It will provide the much needed support to help organisations do this."
Editor's notes:
- WRAP helps individuals, businesses and local authorities to reduce waste and recycle more, making better use of resources and helping to tackle climate change.
- Established as a not-for-profit company in 2000, WRAP is backed by government funding from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Working in seven key areas (Construction, Retail, Manufacturing, Organics, Business Growth, Behavioural Change, and Local Authority Support), WRAP’s work focuses on market development and support to drive forward recycling and materials resource efficiency within these sectors, as well as wider communications and awareness activities including the multi-media national Recycle Now campaign for England.
