WRAP invite retail partners to explore resource efficient solutions

04 June 2008

Opportunities for the retail supply chain to be at the forefront of cutting edge environmental and economical best practice are on the horizon, thanks to new project funding launched this week by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme).

WRAP are looking to work in partnership with and across the sector to deliver more resource efficient systems for products through reductions in packaging, product or food waste.  This includes areas that deliver change in full or in part of the chain, from the factory gate, through manufacture, distribution, back of store, in store and to the end consumer. Funding for as much as half of the project costs and where appropriate technical expertise will be made available to the successful partners.

Through demonstration trials and research & development projects, WRAP is looking for radical new solutions to be explored. This will give partners the opportunity to build on brand values and develop further partnerships and integrated solutions with their customers and suppliers. It could also reduce product damage and improve logistics systems.

Opportunities to contribute to the delivery of Courtauld Commitment targets and other voluntary agreements, as well as resource efficient solutions that add value will be available to the successfully appointed partners.

Partnership projects are invited under two tenders which cover:

  • funding for trials of innovative reusable / refillable packaging systems; and
  • funding for trials of product reformulation, new merchandising and dispensing systems.

Both have the aim of reducing packaging and / or product waste (including food waste).

Charlotte Henderson, Retail Supply Chain Manager for WRAP said: “Work with us to be at the forefront of the development of new carbon efficient best practice by making economic and environmental improvements. Together we can deliver new solutions to areas including packaging, product reformulation and merchandising. And for the first time this funding covers initiatives in full or in part of the retail supply chain - from the factory gate through to the consumer.“

Full details are available on the WRAP website www.wrap.org.uk/wrap_corporate/tenders/index.html  This also includes details of how we can help find project partners. The deadline for submissions is 12.30pm on 16th September.
