Helpline now providing recycling advice and guidance

02 November 2001
• WRAP launches freephone service for business on November 6th
• Initiative to tackle lack of awareness and understanding of recycled products
• Helpline number freephone: 0808 100 2040

Access to key information about recycled materials, products and processes is now available to business through a free Helpline service launched by WRAP, the Waste and Resources Action Programme.

The service - on 0808 100 2040 - is targeted at anyone in the commercial, industrial or public sectors who needs to know more about issues such as business opportunities in recycling or the availability of recycled materials and products. It aims to offer practical advice and guidance to help businesses buy or sell more recycled products and sweep away some of the myths surrounding recycling.

Users will include buyers, product specifiers, plant and production managers, machinery manufacturers, company managing directors, business support organisations and the public sector.

In some cases, the pressure for information might spring from stakeholders wanting to know about an organisation’s policy and actions on buying recycled. Or a business may want to switch from virgin to recycled materials but doesn’t know how to specify or find the material.

WRAP is a not-for-profit, Government-funded company, which has been established to create stable and efficient markets for recycled materials and products.

Its principal focus is on four specific materials, paper, plastic, wood and glass, and the areas that influence their usage - financial/economic factors, procurement policies and standards and specifications.

WRAP’s chief executive, Jennie Price, explains:

“One of our key tasks is to identify and remove barriers to increased recycling and particularly the use of recycled products. The most evident obstacle is lack of awareness and understanding of the opportunities to buy recycled products and the economic and environmental benefits of recycling. Indeed there are many misconceptions about quality, availability and value.”

“We have access to a vast fund of knowledge which we want to make available to business to help them make informed decisions - and the most direct way of doing that is to set up a free Helpline which will be able either to give an immediate response or investigate and call back with answers.”

“Understanding more about the options for using products made from recycled materials can open up new business opportunities.”

WRAP is supporting the launch of the new service with a publicity campaign focused mainly on the specialist trade press.
