Aims

This workshop aims to provide local authority officers and contractors with an update on current issues impacting on packaging and looks at future opportunities to increase the range of plastic packaging collected for recycling in the UK.

 

Target audience

 

This workshop targets individuals with responsibility for the collection and/or sorting of household recyclables, specifically: local authority recycling officers; waste management operations managers; and waste management contractors.

 

Structure

 

1 day non-residential (10:00 to 16:00)

 

Learning outcomes

 

Upon completion of the workshop delegates will be able to:

 

  • recognise the implications of the defra packaging strategy;
  • understand the current steps that retailers are taking to decrease packaging and identify the implications for local authority collection schemes;
  • appreciate the markets available for recycled plastics, their capacity and how it is envisaged that these will develop;
  • evaluate how mixed plastics can be incorporated into an effective cost efficient collection scheme; and
  • identify the potential impact on cost and performance of adding mixed plastics to collection systems.
