Material Recovery Facilities

Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) have a role to play in raising the quality of recyclate in the UK. WRAP is working in partnership with all sectors of the materials recovery industry to improve understanding of the issues involved and to identify viable ways of improving quality.

As a first step to achieving this WRAP is undertaking a project looking at quality in relation to MRFs, looking specifically at ways to improve the quality of recyclable materials from MRFs. This work will assit MRFs to generate more value from their outputs and improve their ability to compete in both domestic and international material markets.

This project uses expertise from the WRAP Manufacturing, Rotate and Business Growth teams and includes the following projects:

  • Identifying and trialling analysis techniques for materials received by and despatched from MRFs;
  • Identifying simple, quick to implement, and cost effective opportunities that can help improve the output quality;
  • Identify and assess equipment to produce glass output material that is of sufficient quality to be used as a feedstock material for the fibreglass, container or any other remelt applications.
  • Establishing the most effective and efficient examples of Quality Management Systems (QMS) within MRFs and we want to know possible options to improve them further;
  • Identify and assess equipment to produce high-quality paper output material from commingled streams.
  • Developing contractual guidance for local authorities and MRF operators to help manage shared risks and shared rewards.

The projects forms part of WRAP’s broader remit to encourage growth in the UK recycling sector and follows on from the findings of its research report Recovering Value from MRFs, which was published in January 2007.
