Sector Specialist (Paper and wood)

WRAP is looking to recruit a Sector Specialist to provide in-depth expertise of paper and wood to WRAP’s teams.Job description
The Sector Specialist will provide WRAP with knowledge leadership in the paper and wood sectors. They will represent WRAP externally and develop strong relevant senior level contacts with government, industry, professional institutes and trade associations. The role will also involve the identification and development of new initiatives that support WRAP’s targets.
Key functions
- Provide relevant technical leadership and support on the strategy, design and execution of all appropriate programmes across WRAP.
- Assist devolved administration teams to develop and deliver relevant strategies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
- Assess opportunities to extend existing programmes and propose practical approaches to take them forward.
- Maintain and develop WRAP’s relevant expertise and capabilities – by building personal expertise and developing that of others.
- Improve WRAP’s knowledge on relevant key market and technology developments.
- Provide input where needed on IPR development and commercial exploitation.
- Monitor international best practice for cellulose fibre procurement, processing, recycling & recovery and ensure that this information is available across
WRAP. - Develop and maintain high level relationships with relevant senior stakeholders in government, industry, professional institutes and trade associations.
- Act as an ambassador for WRAP - explain and advocate WRAP’s programmes to external audiences and build support for them.
- Help to ensure that relevant programme activities are securely based in domestic and European policy. This will include interaction with key government committees and departments.
- Provide a resource for seconding to WRAP’s strategic stakeholders when appropriate.
- Contribute to external and WRAP organised conferences, seminars, reports and other publications as appropriate.
- Provide in-house training to WRAP staff.
- Undertake other related tasks as may be determined from time to time by their line manager, Director of Market Development or other WRAP Director.
Key Requirements and Personal Profile
Education and experience - Essential
- In depth understanding of the paper and wood fibre supply chains, processing, recycling and recovery operations.
- Understanding of relevant legislation, policy and voluntary agreements and their implications on cellulose fibre procurement, consumption and end of first-life options across the UK
- Excellent networks within the paper and wood industries.
- Strong communication and advocacy skills both externally and within WRAP.
Desirable
- Formal science or engineering education with an emphasis on cellulose fibre processing.
- Member of a materials engineering or similar professional body.
