Packaging Technologist

Summary:

This role will provide both technical support for packaging optimisation as well as management of specific projects, primarily within the grocery sector. The projects will involve the development and refining of web based tools and resources as well as working with stakeholders to resolve packaging issues.

Job description

  1. Manage packaging-related projects that cover the development of specific tools and technical resources for packaging technologists and others to use within the retail supply chain, using WRAP’s project management systems, to ensure that they are delivered on time and to budget. This will include the management of external contractors, establishing project-specific targets and milestones, monitoring and reviewing progress and reporting outcomes.
  2. To support the publication of research findings, the production of effective case studies on the team’s work and support the dissemination and uptake of project findings.
  3. Provide active technical support to key retailers and brands consistent with WRAP’s objectives.
  4. Provide active support to other Retail Innovation team members and provide leadership and guidance to contractors as appropriate.
  5. Implement and manage competitive tender processes including development of tenders, tender review and assessment panels as well as the establishment of contracts for approved project proposals.
  6. Assist in the development of marketing communication campaigns to promote and encourage uptake by relevant companies that will deliver household waste and CO2 reductions.
  7. Assist in the preparation and development of monthly progress reports, impact monitoring data and quarterly reports to WRAP’s funders as required.
  8. On a monthly basis, forecast the anticipated expenditure on projects and work to ensure that forecasts are met.
  9. Ensure close liaison with other relevant programmes within and outside WRAP, as and when required.
  10. To undertake other work within the Retail Innovation team as and when required.

Key Requirements and Personal Profile

Education and experience - Essential:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong experience and knowledge of the retail sector and/or its supply chain
  • Broad general knowledge of resource efficiency and environmental issues

Desirable:

  • Experience of managing budgets
