Case Study: Indesit Closed-Loop Recycling Trial with WEEE Plastics

With substantial material and environmental savings, Indesit has become the first company to successfully incorporate recycled plastic from the UK waste stream within a high-end electrical equipment item on a large-scale.

Indesit managed to get the same production costs for recycled material
Indesit made 5% saving on raw material costs on over 500,000 products per year
Reduction in oil for virgin production and the amount of plastic waste going to landfill

In collaboration with WRAP and Axion Recycling, Indesit's investigations enabled them to introduce a new access panel plate onto two premium washing machine models.  The panel is manufactured using 100% recycled plastic recovered from domestic fridges, and has similar characteristics to the previously manufactured part that was made from virgin material.

The result is a significant saving in CO2 emissions, cumulative cost and raw materials - and also coincides with the launch of WRAP's summary report on positive consumer attitudes to electrical and electronic products containing WEEE.

This collaboration project demonstrates the technical feasibility of closed-loop recycling in high-end electrical equipment items - as well as the economic and environmental benefits of the approach.
