Electrical Product Design Review: Vacuum Cleaners

Through product-breakdown, WRAP has identified a number of cost savings and design improvements that can increase durability, reduce return rates and prolong product lifespan.

The case studies below describe how simple design changes and better customer information can achieve a net-positive result for businesses bottom-line.

Own-brand vacuum cleaner

Based on an estimated 100,000 unit sales per annum per model, savings were estimated to be:

~ £31,200 per annum

~ 472 tonnes of material

~ 148 tonnes of material per annum

Improvements Identified

During the teardown the following key areas were identified that would benefit from design and/or manufacturing changes: 

1.

Carry out testing on all of the accessories to identify the faults and potentially carry out redesign.

2.

Improve the design of the cable rewind to ensure the cable fully retracts

3.

Improve the design of the wheel assembly to reduce material use and improve performance

4.

Improve the design of the bypass valve holder to prevent stress occurring from the screw fastening.

Branded vaccum cleaner

Based on an estimated 100,000 unit sales per annum per model, savings were estimated to be:

~ £30,090 per annum

~ 88.06 tonnes of CO2e per annum

~ 20.06 tonnes of material per annum 

Improvements Identified

During the teardown the following key areas were identified that would benefit from design and/or manufacturing changes:

1.

Reduce the amount of polymer material used for the double cover.

2.

Review the assembly and quality assurance procedure for the filter to reduce the amount of glue used.

3.

Make the handle and main body from one material with over-mouldings to eliminate the need for snap fits.

4.

Reduce the overall amount of packaging used with more strategic packing of the components and accessories.

5.

Eliminate the user guide and guarantee slip and replace with a quick start guide, including advice on how to maintain the efficiency of the vacuum cleaner.
