UK Packaging Awards 2007

WRAP is pleased to sponsor the Sustainable Pack Award at this year's UK Packaging Awards.  These awards celebrate packs that demonstrate the very highest sustainability standards throughout the entire production, use and recycling process.

And the winner is Ardagh Glass.

Ardagh Glass believes its 70cl spirit bottle, at 298g, is the lightest on the market produced using the narrow neck press and blow method.

Manufactured at the company's Portland Plant in Irvine, Ayreshire, the bottle took 18 months to develop and the process involved extensive trials and design improvements.

The Co-operative is the first retailer to use the lightweight bottle and Co-operative Food Retail chief executive, Guy McCracken, regards the bottle as "an important milestone" in his organisation's drive to advance waste minimisation and packaging reduction.

In a hotly contested category where judges found it difficult to select a clear winner, the Ardagh Glass entry triumphed thanks to the sleek design of the bottle, its environmental benefits, and its ability to save supply chain costs.

Andy Dawe, Head of WRAP's Retail Programme said:

“WRAP is delighted that this breakthrough bottle design has been recognised in this way.  It demonstrates what is possible in glass lightweighting, an area where WRAP is working closely with the industry through its suite of GlassRite research projects.  The aim is to move towards more sustainable packaging delivering cost and environmental benefits.”
