Biodegradable and compostable packaging
During March 2007, WRAP and the Green Alliance hosted an invitation only industry workshop entitled: 'Biodegradable and compostable packaging: getting it right'.
The aim of the event was to explore a number of important issues of how best to ensure that the environmental benefits of biodegradable and compostable packaging are maximized, if, as predicted, the amount of material coming onto the market increases significantly.
Points covered included:
- consumer perception and behaviour;
- how to ensure that the consumer is clear about what can be composted;
- how local authorities could collect different compostable wastes separately; and
- the availability of appropriate technologies and end markets for composted materials.
Fulfilling all these pre-conditions will require the input and cooperation of a wide range of stakeholders.
The workshop included representatives of the material suppliers, retailers, brand owners, local authorities, waste management companies, compost operators, and related associations and bodies.
Green Alliance and WRAP are developing draft guidance and next steps as a result of the event for wider consultation. In the meantime, the presentations given at this workshop are available to download below:
