Non-Household Food Waste

In total food waste in the UK is around 18 - 20 million tonnes, with household food waste making the single largest contribution (6.7 million tonnes).

Retailers are believed to generate about 1.6 million tonnes of food waste, food manufacturers about 3.5 million tonnes, with food service and restaurants producing about another 3 million tonnes. The remainder comes from the agricultural and horticultural sector, and commercial food waste (e.g. from hospitals, schools, etc).

For some time WRAP has been working with the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) to better understand how to work most effectively with its members to tackle the challenges raised by the Food Industry Sustainably Strategy (FISS).

WRAP is planning to work closely with FDF and its members to deliver “The Environment: Our Five-fold Ambition” - a new environmental policy position paper which was launched with Defra ministers on 25 October 2007.

This will be a genuine partnership.  FDF members will help WRAP to achieve its food and packaging reduction targets under the Courtauld Commitment.  WRAP, in turn, intends to help FDF to achieve its ambition of zero food and packaging waste to landfill from 2015.

Biowaste - garden, kitchen and food waste

Recent research reports from Eunomia show that there can be real cost and environmental gains from collecting garden and food waste separately from each other.  This enables processing costs to be minimised and can increase the amount of food collected.  Further information can be found on the Biowaste webpages.
