Seasonal Confectionery Working Group
Packaging Reduction Initiative
Objectives
This Initiative is an industry venture involving WRAP, confectionery brands and other confectionery manufacturers that has the following objectives:
- To identify and act on opportunities for industry to optimise packaging in the seasonal confectionery sector, in response to publicly announced packaging reduction targets by the major UK grocery retailers and brands.
- To establish voluntary industry packaging standards which may be used by the seasonal confectionery sector:
> to promote a comprehensive packaging reduction programme for seasonal confectionery within the UK;
> to help generate a packaging reduction ‘culture’ wherein packaging reduction is an early consideration in any range review exercise;
> to deliver reductions in the household waste stream going to landfill; - To identify and address any barriers to the above;
- To monitor progress toward Initiative targets and disseminate findings to the sector as a whole.
- To underpin the principles of the Courtauld Commitment.

SCWG member roles
WRAP facilitate and co-ordinate the activities of the SCWG whilst seasonal confectionery brand owners and manufacturers can be actively involved to help achieve the Initiative’s objectives.
SCWG members’ Initiative activities
These will include the following:
- Carrying out projects that are consistent with Courtauld Commitment objectives;
- Members reviewing their own individual supply chain production equipment and identifying any packaging reduction project trial opportunities e.g. light-weighting;
- Discussing packaging reduction opportunities within the SCWG and, if practicable, progressing those opportunities to individual product trial status;
- Providing assistance to WRAP who will aggregate relevant sector packaging weight including baseline data needed to monitor trial progress against agreed targets*;
- In conjunction with WRAP, agreeing individual trial plans describing the anticipated programmes of work including: timescales, anticipated (trial) packaging weight savings and subsequent packaging weight savings from replication and the methodology to measure and record the outcome of the individual trial and subsequent rollout;
- Providing timely updates of individual trial progress to WRAP for dissemination to SCWG members in accordance with the principles set out below*;
- Supporting the subsequent dissemination of the Initiative outcomes to all members of the Sector.
Information Sharing*
In the course of the above activities SCWG members may need to provide WRAP with confidential information relating e.g. to the weight of seasonal confectionery packaging produced by their businesses. WRAP will enter into appropriate non-disclosure agreements with each SCWG member to ensure the confidentiality of such information, and will only disclose approved aggregated data.
There will be no sharing of pricing information, marketing plans, product launches or commercial strategies. In addition, there will be no sharing (between SCWG members) of individual SCWG members’ sales volumes. WRAP will aggregate information supplied by all members, before circulation to the group, so as not to compromise commercial sensitivities.
