Building on the success of the Courtauld Commitment, we are continuing our work across the retail sector to develop and implement initiatives that increase resource efficiencies in packaging and reducing food waste.  Presently this covers household waste but it will be expanded to include more activity in the supply chain.

The category approach

To be most beneficial to the whole supply chain we are aligning ourselves into categories.  This will enable us to work effectively at both board level and at the coal face to ensure the benefits of resource efficiency can be fully recognised and supported.

By working more collaboratively within existing business streams we can help to better understand the category priorities and overcome any barriers to change.  This will deliver savings and environmental benefits for all parties within a category.

We can bring independent facilitation and help build on the knowledge of optimising the performance of packaging and explore ways where pack formats can help to reduce food waste.  By packaging we mean primary, secondary and tertiary.

The focus will be on the following grocery categories:

• Ambient;
• Beverages;
• Chilled and Frozen; and
• Household and Personal Care.

Resource efficiencies

The benefits can include:

• Meeting customers expectations for less packaging;
• Reduced carbon footprint;
• Enhancing brand perception;
• Less energy required in the manufacturing process;
• Logistic efficiencies;
• Use of more shelf space in store;
• Fewer raw materials being used; and
• Cost savings.

    The environmental costs of food waste are enormous and once in landfill, food breakdown produces methane - a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
