This recent research can serve as best pratice for manufacturers, retailers and pack designers who wish to look at packaging optimisation. The case study focuses on the key benefits to business and the environment through to the consumer at home.

Some key facts

  • In the UK 12.5 million tonnes of paper is consumed per year; and
  • Cartonboard contributes 743,000 tonnes and corrugated cardboard 2.4 million tonnes. This equates to 12.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year.

The innovations showcased in this case study can be widely replicated. Some involve radical changes necessitating research, design and rebranding, others are as simple as using a smaller or thinner box for a product. All can lead to material cost savings and enhanced brand perception in the eyes of the consumer receiving the goods.

Economics

  • Every tonne of paper not used in the packaging equates to a £280 saving;
  • Fewer road trips are needed to transport the optimised packaging, reducing fuel costs and emissions; and
  • Environmental credentials are enhanced.
