Report: Packaging reductions in Birds Eye’s frozen foods
Savings in household waste through the reduction of the folding box weight in Birds Eye’s frozen foods.
This project was run by Birds Eye Limited, part of the Birds Eye Iglo group, partnered with M-Real.
The purpose of the project was to assess if board weight (grammage) could be reduced on Birds Eye’s current frozen product range in cartons.
This work has shown that a selection of the board grade and weight is a balance between:
- operational efficiency of the actual packing line; this is particularly relevant when considering weight selection and hence board stiffness; and
- compression strength of the carton which must be sufficient to prevent any carton collapse in transit and distribution; again the board weight and stiffness have a direct effect on the compression strength.
To enable further packaging reductions, the packaging process and carton fill level are areas where the business has the most potential to enable significant reductions.
