Retread tyres on light commercial vehicles
The use of retread tyres on light commercial vehicles represents a real opportunity for UK fleet managers. They are a sustainable alternative to new tyres that are:
- cost effective;
- environmentally friendly;
- safe;
- durable; and
- flexible.
Retread tyres are made from similar compounds to new tyres and are required by law to be manufactured to the same stringent performance criteria.
They therefore offer comparable levels of performance, durability and safety to their new tyre equivalents. Consider also that a significant percentage of UK heavy goods vehicles and aircraft use retreads, proving their reliability in high intensity applications.
The environmental benefits are clear too – retreading a tyre extends its life, reducing the demand for new tyres and reducing the number of waste tyres being created. Specifying retread tyres for your fleet therefore represents a significant and straightforward way to improve the environmental performance of your business and strengthen your corporate social responsibility (CSR) credentials.
Running retread tyres also makes sense from a commercial perspective. A WRAP-funded study has found that retread tyres cost, on average, 10% less than new tyres. This makes them significantly cheaper than premium tyres and cheaper than, or comparable to, imported budget tyres.
The WRAP tyres programme has published a comprehensive information sheet which provides fleet managers, or those with responsibility for the CSR performance of their business, with the answers to a number of frequently asked questions about retread tyres. It also helps dispel the myths and out-of-date misconceptions that currently surround the use of retreads for the light commercial vehicle sector.
