Evaluation of the WRAP Separate Food Waste Collection Trials

UK households throw away millions of tonnes of food waste every year. There were an estimated 7.2 million tonnes of household food waste in the UK in 2010. This represents a decrease of 1.1 million tonnes from the estimate from 2006/7 of 8.3 million tonnes.

This report presents estimates of food waste from UK homes. Estimates were last updated in 2009, based on a combination of original WRAP research (from 2007/8), and a 2006/7 synthesis of local authority compositional studies. This established a baseline against which progress in terms of waste prevention could be measured.

This report describes work undertaken to update the UK estimate of household food waste, to determine what progress has been made and the scale of the challenge remaining.
