Use of Compost in Agriculture
The key aim of the project is to create new higher value agricultural markets for compost in the East of England.
Background
Agriculture is an essential market in terms of compostingg ecominics as a bulk user for large quantities. The soils of Eastern England contain large areas of very sandy soils which are low in organic matter and therefore, highly prone to wind and eater erosion. The project aims to demonstrate the benifits of using PAS100 quality compost in agricultural systems to improve soil productivity, water retention and reduce soil erosion. The project benifits from strong partnership working and includes compost manufacturers, agronomists, farmers and key supply chain intermedaries.
Objectives
To promote the uses and benefits of compost to farmers, farm managers, farm (spreading) contractors and other supply chain intermediaries through case studies, trade shows, site visits and marketing literature.
To demonstrate the technical, practical and economic viablity of using compost to reduce soil erosion and improve drainage control on agricultural land.
To identify and work towards overcoming the barriers to compost use in agriculture in the East of England.
