Hampshire Soils Manufacturing using Compost, CD&EW and quarry waste

Date: - 30 Sep 05
Funding type: Capital
Project code: RMD3 -047

The aim of the work is to increase the amount of organic, excavation and mineral wastes recycled in Hampshire by developing a manufactured soil in order to provide new markets for green waste and mineral waste, CD&EW and gully waste which would otherwise go to landfill.

Background

Hampshire County Council with RMDF support is leading a consortium of industrial partners to increase the recycling of biodegradable, green, gullly and construction demolition & excavation waste (CD&EW) through the manufacture of soils. The project is undertaking research into soil blends and has strong partnership working for soil manufactures, waste producers and end users.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are to develop the existing infrastructure and facilities in Hampshire to manager the conversion of biodegradable and mineral waste streams into manufactured soils and to undertake trials and R&D to demonstrate the value of manufactured soils.

Update

The project has been underway for 8 months and work undertaken in this time has included the development of a detailed business plan, market assessment, sampling and analysis of the potential input materials and comparison with relevant soil quality guidelines. Small scale growing trials have been undertaken on soil mixes and compared against comparative growing medium , whilst larger scale mixing trials have recently been completed.  Unfortunately, the project has ended prematurely due to the loss of the soil manufacturing site.  However, the project has identified a wealth of information that will be helpful to others and a project report is currently in production.
