    Geography

    Stretching from the River Tees to the Scottish Border, and the Pennines to the North Sea, North East England, with a population of 2.5m and an area of 9,000 km2, is the smallest of England’s regions both in terms of population and, with the exception of London, geography.

    The North East comprised of four sub-regions:

    • Northumberland;
    • Tyne & Wear;
    • County Durham; and
    • Tees Valley.

    The region has significant economic and social challenges to tackle.

    Regional Development Agency

    • accelerating economic development and regeneration;
    • promoting business growth and efficiency, boosting investment and increasing competitiveness;
    • generating thousands of new jobs;
    • developing the work skills of the people in the North East to meet the needs of a changing economy.

    Sustainable development

    ONE sees sustainable development as a major consideration in all its projects. It is also making significant investment in renewable energy and other low carbon technologies. This will contribute not only to economic development but also to social and environmental improvements in the region.
