Regional Recycling Activity

    Waste facts

The East of England managed an estimated 9.2 million tonnes of commercial and industrial, and household waste in 2005. Just over half this waste was recycled or recovered. (Source: work undertaken for WRAP by Esys 2006).

Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire receive waste from other areas, particularly London. This has led to the development of a waste sector, including processors and recyclers in these counties.

    Markets for recycled materials

Agriculture is an essential market in terms of composting economics as a bulk user for large quantities.

A red tractor pulls a yellow trailer, spreading compost across a field at Gable Farm trial site, Tunstall. Bare trees in a line in background. The soils of Eastern England contain large areas of very sandy soils which are low in organic matter and therefore, highly prone to wind and water erosion.

There are opportunities to establish increased use of PAS100 quality compost in agricultural systems to improve soil productivity, water retention and reduce soil erosion.

EEDA are funding a Remade East Initiative delivered by UKCEED and Remade Essex. WRAP is supporting this initiative through attendance of the steering group.
