The East Midlands region is home to the top two performing councils for recycling rates:

    • North Kesteven District Council in Lincolnshire with an rate of 51%; and
    • Rushcliffe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire with a rate of 49%.

    Market development

The East Midlands Regional Waste Strategy states that:

"If demand for recycled or otherwise sustainable products is to be increased, then support must be provided to develop markets to supply such materials within the region.

Issues such as economies of scale and proximity to markets may mean it is not economically viable, or appropriate, to create regional markets for all types of recyclable materials.

However, there are opportunities to capitalise on regional economics, markets and infrastructure to create and expand regional markets. Key stakeholders should therefore now work together to identify and develop appropriate regional markets".

WRAP is working closely with EMDA to identify activities to support regionally focused market development, and develop a regional action plan.
