Business Resource Efficiency and Waste Programme (BREW)

This programme started in April 2005, and uses part of the Landfill Tax paid by business to incentivise businesses to reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill and to assist them in developing ways to achieve this. This has been mostly through developing and expanding existing programmes that have already proven successful.

BREW Co-ordinator for the East Midlands

Jonathan Nobbs is the BREW co-ordinator for the East Midlands, he is based at the Regional Development Agency (RDA) - East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA).

Part of his role is to co-ordinate resource efficiency support for the region, and make it easier for businesses to access this support including that of national BREW partners such as WRAP.

• Carbon Trust - helps business and the public sector cut carbon emissions, and support the development of low carbon technologies.
• Englands Regional Development Agencies - furthering economic development, business efficiency, regeneration and promotion of employment opportunities.
• Environment Agency - the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales.
• Envirowise - offers UK businesses free, independent, confidential advice and support on practical ways to increase profits, minimise waste and reduce environmental impact.
• National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) - a business opportunity programme that uses industrial symbiosis to identify sustainable resource management solutions.
• WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) - helping businesses and the general public to reduce waste, to use more recycled material, and recycle more things more often.
