Wood Projects

Demonstration of End Uses for Recovered MDF Fibre

This project compares the performance of products manufactured using rMDF such as wood plastic composites and MDF with the equivalent made from virgin wood.

Recycled Wood in High Value Markets

Urban Forest Limited and McGrath Brothers (Waste Control) Limited will receive the part-funding to install new capacity to process recycled wood into value-added products. The funding was provided as part of WRAP’s Capital Support Programme, and encourages the sector to build new wood reprocessing infrastructure targeted at higher value products.

Assessment of the Mechanical and Physical Properties of Recycled Wood Products

The Forest Products Research Centre (FPRC), Bucks Chiltern University College, have been commissioned to a project to objectively assess and define the typical properties of recycled wood products (RWP’s), including their mechanical and physical characteristics.

Added Value Recycled Wood Products – The Market Opportunities

This project focuses on defining the added value markets for recycled wood and quantifying them in terms of volume, value, buying trends and an analysis of competing products. Initial work was completed in 2005 and further work is now focussed on providing a commercial analysis of the equine bedding sector and a review of landscaping/horticultural products.

Code of Practice for the Wood Recycling Industry

This project aims to establish the viability of an industry code of practice acceptable to the wood recyclers that promotes good practice across a range of criteria; e.g. management of contamination, quality of products, environmental standards, regulatory compliance, engagement with customers etc.

Feasibility of Composting Wood and Cardboard Waste with Green Garden Waste

ADAS, in collaboration with TRADA Technology, are undertaking a project to determine the feasibility of composting wood and/or cardboard waste with Civic Amenity green waste or kerbside-collected green waste and kitchen waste. Using composting trials, the work shall establish how to optimise the co-composting of these materials, identify the effects of including wood and/or cardboard into the feedstock, and to assess how the quality of compost is affected.

Development and Trial of Visual Inspection Guides and Chemical Contamination Detection Kits

This project will provide wood re-processors with the tools needed to enable them to easily identify contaminated wood. The tools being trialled include a ring bound visual inspection guide to allow site workers to identify potential contaminated pieces of wood and a chemical colour-change toolkit.

Guidance for Mixed Wood Waste Producers on End Markets

This project aims to produce a comprehensive guide for mixed waste producers on the availability of end markets for the variety of wood waste they handle (from re-use to recycling). The guidance will highlight the requirements of these end markets in terms of the latest feedstock specifications and tolerances to contaminations.

Sales and Marketing Support for SME Wood Recyclers

One-to-one sales and marketing consultancy support to enable SME wood recyclers to maximise the success of the added-value product sales opportunities.

    Wood Trade Landscaping Campaign

This work is the largest of four areas within the wood programme targeted at increasing demand for Recycled Wood Products. This campaign focuses on the landscaping sector with the strategic aims of raising awareness of recycled wood products for landscaping use amongst Local Authorities and their influencers and increasing procurement of these products. The campaign includes a range of sales support materials and communications activity, e.g. trade advertising, public relations, direct marketing, events etc.
