Target Ten - Local Authority Bottle Promotion Campaign

Plastic bottle collection by local authorities has grown dramatically over the last 3 years (Bottle Survey 2006). In 2006, 86% of authorities offered some form of collection. However, the average performance of plastic bottle kerbside schemes in the UK is roughly 5kg/household/year.

There are over 20kg/household/year in the waste stream, so clearly there are plenty of bottles the existing schemes are missing. Target Ten aimed to get an additional 50 local authorities to be collecting 10kg/household/year or greater by March 2008.

Target Ten made available a series of local authority and waste management case studies available on www.wrap.org.uk/plasticbottlecollection.  WRAP also produced a series of free online plastic bottle recycling Good Practice Guides, covering topics such as kerbside infrastructure, bring scheme infrastructure, handling end markets and communications.
