Plastics Collection Survey 2008

The collection and recycling of plastic bottle has continued to increase compared to 2007 figures. The weight of plastic bottles being collected for recycling in the UK has increased by 68% with 92% of local authorities offering collection facilities, according to new research funded by WRAP and undertaken by Valpak in partnership with Recoup (RECycling of Used Plastics).

The findings of the “Local Authority Plastics Collection Survey 2008' indicate that UK collections are now performing at a rate of nearly 182,000 tonnes per annum, which equates to 4,525 million plastic bottles. To put this increase into context, nearly 35% of bottles in the household waste stream are now being collected for recycling whereas in 2001 this figure was just 3%.

WRAP commissioned Valpak in partnership with Recoup to undertake a national UK local authority plastics recycling survey. This is the fourteenth such annual survey undertaken. The results are based on responses from UK local authorities of which there are 471, or, in some cases, previous survey data and/or information from local authority websites. Work on the survey commenced in November 2007 and culminated in the publication of this report in June 2008.
