Golf bunkers

Processed sand was recently tested in bunkers at the PGA Seniors Event at Carden Park with great success. The tour pros reported a more consistent feel to the sand, and were very happy with its playing characteristics.

Although perceived problems with colour and safety have been raised as potential issues, these are being quickly addressed and overcome by continuing research.

Main benefits:

  • Higher penetration resistance leads to less ‘plugging’ of the ball on impact – still challenging though!
  • Higher ‘angle of repose’ permits the design of steeper bunker faces.
  • Better compaction gives firmer underfoot conditions.
