WRAP helps UK manufacturing businesses realise the economic and environmental benefits of using fewer resources more efficiently - reducing waste, using high quality recycled materials and designing for recyclability to meet both consumer and legislative demands.
WRAP works closely with the manufacturing industry to develop sustainable markets for waste materials diverted from landfill, helping to meet the growing demand for products with higher recycled content that are recyclable. Resource efficiency in the Manufacturing sector is increasingly important and has strong economic as well as environmental benefits.
See below for how producers can benefit.

The Quality Protocols - reducing your regulatory burden
A Quality Protocol defines and gives guidance on when a waste ceases to be a waste and can be used as a resource.
In partnership with the Environment Agency, WRAP works with recycling and reprocessing businesses in the construction, manufacturing and horticulture sectors, to minimise their regulatory burden and realise the economic benefits of reusing waste materials in manufacturing industries or supplying into other markets. Find out more about the Quality Protocols.

Packaging materials - addressing market failures
We work with manufacturers and the whole packaging supply chain to address the following issues:
Diverting mixed plastics and glass from the domestic waste stream
The whole supply chain has a part to play in increasing the diversion of materials such as mixed plastics, glass and aluminium packaging from landfill and into high value recycled applications. Click below for more information on how you can get involved and how we are working with the following:Increasing the supply of high quality recycled materials
This also has benefits for the whole supply chain - see how you can find suppliers and buyers of recycled glass and recycled plastic. WRAP also provides contact information on fabricators and manufacturers of plastics.

Design for recyclability in packaging
Designing out waste in glass and plastic packaging e.g. wine bottles and PET soft drinks bottles has significant benefits to the whole supply chain.Increasing recycled content can have business and environmental benefits – and a strong resonance with consumers. Read more about consumer perceptions in a recent glass report or find out how to measure the recycled content of your glass packaging.

Electricals and electronics - becoming more resource efficient
Designing and manufacturing electronics to be more resource efficient can save both money, and material and energy resources.
- Good Practice Guidance is now available to help all those involved in the collection and treatment of WEEE to improve the quality and quantity available for recovery and recycling.
- The development of a closed-loop market for UK-sourced WEEE materials, such as plastic is both financially and environmentally beneficial and has been proven to be technically and economically feasible.
- Designing electricals with recycled content is popular with consumers and also technically and economically feasible.

Support for SME manufacturers - Rethink Waste
RETHINK WASTE
WRAP has launched a free initiative called Rethink Waste to help manufacturers reduce waste, improve resource efficiency and save money.
The initiative consists of three monthly online training modules, backed up by audiocasts, telephone support and in-depth publications.
WHY JOIN THE RETHIK WASTE?
The initiative will provide manufacturers with a simple structured approach to:
• understand how much waste your company produces;
• understand how much this costs;
• identify simple ways to start reducing waste, and saving money;
• measure the waste and cost savings you have made.
EEF Head of Environment, Gareth Stace, says:
We welcome additional support to help the sector get the best from its resources. Free initiatives such as Rethink Waste offer a practical and accessible route to resource efficiency and we will be encouraging our members to take part.”The closing date to sign up for Rethink Waste is 15th September 2010, so don’t miss your chance to sign up for this free initiative.
Visit www.wrap.org.uk/rethink for more information and to register for the Rethink Waste initiative.
WHAT OTHER COMPANIES LIKE YOURS HAVE SAID ABOUT THE INITIATIVE:“Lots of new ideas on how to tackle the problems. I particularly liked the idea of a
waste map of the facility and this has proved very useful.”
John Boyce, Dales Engineering Services“Rethink Waste enables you to take a broader look at waste which includes those
areas of waste that you wouldn’t normally investigate.”
