Separate food waste collection trials

WRAP with funding from Defra has supported a number of local authorities to conduct trials of food waste collections.  These trials have involved the separate weekly collection of food waste for either in-vessel composting or anaerobic digestion from over 94,000 households.  A diverse range of local authorities took part in the trials so as to gauge how food waste collection schemes could work in both urban and rural areas, and among different types of housing (including flats) and communities.

Profiles of the local authorities who took part in the trials of separate food waste collections.

As well as providing financial support, WRAP provided advice on the design and roll out of the trials and on communications materials.

If your local authority is considering introducing food waste collections and you would like advice on the options available and how to communicate service changes to residents then support is available from our Local Authority Support Programme.

The results of the trials are available to download together with some case studies.
