Description of trial area:
No rural areas. Collections provided to a cross-section of housing types - traditional terraces, semi-detached estates and large detached households. Collections run Monday to Friday to approximately 1,250 households per day.

Liners are provided. Residents can ask the collection team or a call centre for more

Support supplied by WRAP:
Purchase of caddies, buckets and liners.  Communications design and printing.  Monitoring and Evaluation. Vehicle Hire

Collection vehicle used:
3.5 tonne transit – enclosed body, sliding side doors, max payload capacity 700 kg

Background information

Local authority size:
121,000 households (approximately 100,000 in houses, 21,000 in flats)

Existing food waste collections:
No, but food waste is also treated by MBT to produce low grade compost

Existing garden waste collection: 
17,000 households supplied with 240 litre bin (few households using 120 and 360 litre bins). Collected fortnightly, no cost to householder

Refuse Collection – frequency and containers used:
Weekly. Mostly 240 litre bins but some households using 140 and 360 litre bins. Only large households are eligible for 360 litre bins

Recycling Collection – frequency and containers used:
Fortnightly. 55 litre box collecting paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles, textiles, household batteries. Extra boxes supplied free of charge
