Health effects study
WRAP and CIWM jointly funded a review of existing knowledge about potential risks and their mitigations associated with fortnightly residual waste collections and related changes to domestic waste systems.
Over 150 published papers and documents were analysed looking specifically at changes in the collection frequency for residual waste from weekly to fortnightly. The review found that there is no direct evidence that fortnightly residual waste collections lead to any health impacts for either householders or waste collectors if existing good practice guidance is followed.
A short commentary on the report is available to download. If you are interested in a greater level of detail consult the full report. Click on the image to view WRAP's good practice guidance (2007) for local authorities operating or considering fortnightly collections.
