Postal trials

The aim of this trial was to understand the effectiveness of collecting batteries from rural areas in the UK that cannot easily access shops with collection points, or that are too remote for collections to take place via a kerbside scheme.

The scheme was launched in Eden (Cumbria) and Dumfries and Galloway in June 2007, covering approximately 38,000 households in total.

How did the scheme work?

Sturdy business reply service polythene bags were supplied to participating householders.  These bags had to meet certain criteria set by the Royal Mail so that waste batteries, which are classified as both Hazardous Waste and Dangerous Goods, could be transported through their systems.
