Local Communications Advice and Funding
Good quality local communications are essential to getting people to understand and support the changes to their local services and to take part in recycling. Significant progress has been made in getting people to participate in recycling in recent years. Recycling services across England have improved and awareness has been raised as a result of the national Recycle Now campaign and the local communications carried out by local authorities funded by WRAP (under the Local Communications and Behavioural Change Local Funds).
The continued provision of good quality local information is critical to efforts to drive up participation and material capture rates further and to reduce contamination. There also is a need to expand this activity to encourage people to reduce waste at home. Wrap is offering local authorities support to implement high quality, effective and cost efficient local communication campaigns relating to recycling and waste prevention. Where appropriate, communications support will be in conjunction with technical advice on system design and operation.
Communications advice
Good practice and learning from previous rounds of local communications work will inform our advice and ensure resources are targeted at communications that are proven and cost efficient. We want to encourage joint working between authorities when appropriate, to ensure consistency of message and cost efficiencies. We can provide guidance on what the advantages of working as a partnership are and how best to go about it. We can also advise on appropriate monitoring of communication campaigns. Authorities with whom we work can be given:
- one to one project management support
- monitoring and financial planning support
- specialist communications and design advice
Communications Funding
Activities funded will be the standard, well proven communication methods adopted in previously funded projects (BCLF, 2006-8) and other successful local authority communication campaigns e.g.
- various printed literature
- site and vehicle signage
- targeted door to door canvassing
- targeted PR work
Communications should adopt appropriate national campaign branding (Recycle Now and/or Love Food Hate Waste) and make use of the growing suite of communication materials that have been developed by WRAP. This enables messages to the public to be reinforced through consistency of brand at all levels and achieves financial savings by using pre designed and tested artwork.
