Local Authority Support Programme England
The programme is funded by Defra for English local authorities. The service offers operational, communications and waste prevention advice, skills training and some funding for local communications activities. If you think you can benefit from our support please complete a 'Request for support' form. We will follow up these requests with discussions to identify the appropriate types of support.
The integrated and extended range of support is delivered through our ROTATE and local communications team. We have to target our resources to best effect and reflect national priorities and have focussed on three priority areas:
Recycling
We particularly want to work with authorities who have the most potential for improving their recycling performance. We believe that those achieving less than 30% recycling and composting and/or less than 20% dry recycling for 2007/08 will benefit most from our support.
Food waste
We want to work with any authority introducing a food waste collection service. For many authorities the collection of food waste will help achieve the next step up in recycling performance and contribute to their landfill diversion targets.
Waste prevention
Our support around waste prevention will be targeted at areas:
- with a significant population that may be large unitary authorities or established partnerships (e.g. two-tier county and district)
- that are committed to prioritising waste prevention and have some resources allocated
- that intend to target food waste
We are particularly keen to help authorities where there is a corporate commitment to improve performance and services as reflected in a Local Area Agreement (LAA) waste indicator target.
We have kept the application process simple: there is a single 'Request for support' form that covers all types of support - operational, communications, waste prevention and communications funding. We will follow up and discuss applications with local authorities to make sure that any support we offer is appropriate to their needs.
Support involving operational, communications or waste prevention advice only is available now and will continue throughout the year, subject to capacity.
