New Battery Recycling Take Back Trial

Seven retailers in Swansea and Eastleigh are launching new battery recycling take-back trials.

The next phase of WRAP's battery collection trials, the retailer take-back trials, involving 33 stores across three council areas began on 31 October 2006 (for Eastleigh and Swansea). The scheme will begin in Perth & Kinross in early 2007.

The retailers involved are:

  • Argos Retail Group plc (including Argos and Homebase stores);
  • B&Q plc;
  • DSG International plc (including Currys, Currys digital and PC World stores);
  • Tesco plc

Which stores are taking part in the trials?

    Battery Containers

    Battery containers have been installed in participating stores and shoppers can drop off all their unwanted/used batteries.

    Different retailers have chosen different types of collection tubes.

    The containers will be located inside the stores.

    Different types of batteries accepted on the take-back schemes

    All used or unwanted rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries can be dropped off for recycling including:

    • AAA and AA cells;
    • button batteries;
    • size C and D; and
    • any laptop and mobile phone batteries.

    Larger batteries (for example 6V, laptop and power tool batteries) can be accepted at some retailers who have the special containers for larger batteries (B&Q, Currys, Currys.digital and PC World).

    Alternatively, residents should contact their local authority to find out whether their nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre accepts larger battery types.

    Unfortunately car, lorry and other similar lead acid batteries cannot be accepted through this scheme. These should be taken to the nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre (civic amenity site) for disposal.
