Trial update phase 3 (up to 23rd of June)

The third evaluation period took place between 27th May – 23rd of June. We received 11 evaluation responses out of 12 partners. 11 partners are now collecting batteries! Harlow will start its 3 monthly collection on the 18th of July!

  • Report produced on 28th of July 2006
  • Period covered: 27th May – 23rd of June
This is the third update on how the battery kerbside trials are doing. The next update will be a quaterly report and should be available by the end of October.

    Partners Feedback

The partners are still collecting more than they expected and most of the feedback is positive:

    • ‘The pilot continues better than expected’
    • ‘All feedback has been very positive and reflects the level of participation so far’
    • ‘The collection has gathered more than anticipated’

    Householder feedback

There is a good understanding on how to use the scheme:

    • Generally very positive feedback – people saying that it is about time we recycled their batteries! We have had sample bags and info on display when we have been attending events and staging information sessions about the new kerbside collections and comments are very favourable’
    • ‘Our materials were done through SWAG – we are happy with these and the householders seem to have a good understanding of what they are being asked to do’
    • ‘More people want to be part of this project’
    • ‘Customer comments tend to be along the lines that they are happy they can now recycle batteries through their existing kerbside recycling service’

    Crews feedback

    Again, very positive comments!

    • ‘People are very pleased to have the service but we have had very few questions which is surprising!’
    • ‘The crews have taken the pilot in their stride without difficulty’
    • ‘The crew are often asked which batteries can be recycled and they have reported a lot of enquiries about whether we can recycle car batteries’

What is WRAP doing about householders not sealing the envelopes or placing loose batteries in kerbside boxes:

WRAP asked the partners who had issues with householders not sealing the bags to:

    • identify the percentage of householders doing this
    • identify suggestions on how to improve the ‘problem’

It was identified that a larger number of householders than expected were not sealing envelopes. Although many envelopes are not sealed, the crews have not reported any particular difficulties with this issue.

In terms of improvements, the partners have recommended the following:

    • Future bag production runs could display the ‘sealing instructions’ more prominently
    • Possibly much bolder font for instructions required?
    • Instructions for sealing bag and not over filling needs to be much more obvious

WRAP is looking at ways of making the instructions clearer on the next production run of the battery containers. We will keep you updated in our next report phase 4

Householders outside the trials want to take part.

WRAP is also working on making all the battery artwork developed for the trials available on the Recyclenow partners website.
