Sports turf fertiliser

Two field trials in the north of England compared surface applied digestate against injection into golf tees, greens and fairways. Walker Resource Management (WRM) and the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) are working in partnership on the projects at Marsden Park golf course in Lancashire and the STRI grounds in West Yorkshire.

The trial plots were compared with areas treated with conventional inorganic fertiliser, and a control area left untreated. Grass was measured and photographed monthly, and assessed by chlorophyll meter.

Initial results demonstrated that for fairways and greens, the liquid digestate produced a greater grass response following injected application, and offers a cheaper alternative to the industry standard, inorganic chemical-based product. Research will continue in order to fully understand the benefits to sports turf.
