Update on Zero Waste Scotland

3rd February 2014

Following an update from Scottish Government about arrangements for Zero Waste Scotland, Liz Goodwin Chief Executive of WRAP today sent the following letter to stakeholders.

"I wanted to update you on some arrangements which will shape the way we take forward WRAP’s strong and very successful relationship with the Scottish Government.  These are set out in the attached letter from George Burgess.

"WRAP designed, built and has run the highly successful Zero Waste Scotland programme for the Scottish Government with great results.  As part of that, we led and then implemented a review of the resource efficiency landscape in Scotland. I am immensely proud of what we have achieved in a very short time.  The Scottish Government has decided that it now wants to integrate that work more closely into the Scottish landscape and we were happy to help them identify the way to do that.  You will see from George’s letter they want to do this a bit later this year.  The Scottish Government have told me how much they value WRAP's work and we in turn value their support.  The Government will continue to buy into our expertise and very successful cross-UK initiatives.  I look forward to our strong partnership going from strength to strength in future.

"It is worth pointing out that the vast majority of the funds currently provided by the Scottish Government stay within our Scottish operations for initiatives delivered in Scotland.  The new delivery arrangements described in George’s letter will therefore have a limited impact on WRAP’s core funding.

"In terms of our broader strategy, I have been working with my Executive team and the WRAP Board to develop WRAP’s new corporate strategy.  An objective of that work is to use our unique position and international impact to build a more diversified income base which will give us more scope to innovate and develop solutions. That work is progressing well.  You may have seen press reports which reported that the WRAP Board has agreed proposals to develop an application for WRAP to obtain charitable status. That would give us access to a new source of funding. These are early days in taking that work forward so all details still to be decided.  I will of course keep you informed on that, and our other initiatives.

"If you have any questions, do please get in touch.  I very much welcome your interest and support."

Regards

Liz Goodwin
