Why?
The food loss and waste challenge is monumental and it is urgent. One third of the world’s food is lost or wasted, yet 800 million people struggle to have enough to eat. The global economy loses $940 billion every year. If food loss and waste were a country it would be the third largest greenhouse emitter on the planet -
What and who?
SDG Target 12.3 provides a historic window of opportunity to address this challenge. To meet it in the remaining 13 short years, governments and companies should move quickly and boldly. Champions 12.3, of whom WRAP’s chief executive, Marcus Gover, is a member, is a coalition of nearly 40 leaders across government, business and civil society dedicated to inspiring ambition, mobilising action and accelerating progress towards achieving 12.3 -
How?
Governments and companies should move quickly and boldly to scale up setting targets, measuring and taking action. Champions 12.3 has produced a roadmap which offers a pathway for achieving SDG Target 12.3, and a way to benchmark progress by countries and companies.
This is the second in an annual series of publications providing an assessment of the world’s progress toward achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 12.3 which aims to:
By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.
Prepared by WRI and WRAP on behalf of Champions 12.3, the report outlines a pathway for achieving SDG Target 12.3 and assesses global progress to date by countries and companies. While momentum is growing and progress in 2017 is promising, much more needs to be done if this important target is to be met on time.

The report we co-authored with WRI shows we are moving in the right direction, but we need to build momentum quickly. We need action from everyone from governments, businesses, NGOs and us all in our homes: uniting in the food waste fight. It is also essential that developing nations get the financial support they need to tackle food loss and waste. We have gathering impetus, and now we have something which could help navigate us all to our destination. There is no time to lose.
