An update on progress in measuring footprint reduction associated with garments sold in the UK by SCAP 2020 (Sustainable Clothing Action Plan) signatories. The results show further progress towards the SCAP 2020 targets, with reductions in carbon and water footprints, and greater use of lower-impact fibres

This report provides an update on progress in measuring footprint reduction associated with garments sold in the UK by signatories to SCAP 2020 (Sustainable Clothing Action Plan). Results to date are provided. Baseline data for 2012 is compared to the most recent year’s reporting (2017) for current SCAP retailers. Data for SCAP recycling and reuse signatories is used to further consider reduction in the waste footprint.

Key findings
  • 17.7% reduction in the water footprint per tonne of garments (exceeding target)
  • 1.1% reduction in waste per tonne in waste arising over product life-cycle
  • 14% reduction in waste to landfill

Figure 2 Percentage reduction in SCAP 2020 retailers’ carbon and water footprints per tonne of garments, compared to targets, from 2012 to 2017

The report uses carbon, water, and waste footprint calculations. These are presented as percentage footprint reduction per tonne of garment sales, compared to SCAP targets. The results are explained, first looking at background changes, specifically the average fibre composition of garment sales, by all SCAP 2020retailers, then looking at improvement actions taken and the effect that these have had on the results.

The report concludes with a summary of recommendations for further action, derived from the results.
