Non-bottle mixed plastic packaging arising from the domestic waste stream accounts for approximately 1 million tonnes per year.
WRAP has worked with partners to trial different technologies for the sorting of non-bottle household plastic packaging (referred to as "mixed plastics") into suitable fractions for the purpose of recycling. A number of trials were run with each selected technology to test the potential for sorting different mixes of input material.
The effectiveness of each technology was evaluated as well as the environmental and economic impacts of operating each process. The work has informed debate on how the UK should deal with this highly visible waste stream and identified potential future opportunities for WRAP to provide support in this area in the future.
An event to disseminate the results of these projects was held at The Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury, London on 5 June 2008. See the link to the right.
