Detecting persistent herbicides in AD

This report will benefit those researching analytical methods for herbicide detection in complex organic matrices such as anaerobic digestate.

A laboratory based investigation into the fate of persistent herbicides in wet, mesophilic anaerobic digestion systems demonstrated that standard analytical techniques were unsuitable for quantification of the majority of herbicides tested. The investigation found that, although further method development improved the levels at which herbicides could be detected, these improvements were insufficient to detect the chemicals of interest at relevant concentrations. Herbicide transfer via digestate is not currently thought to be a significant risk.
