Community By Design Demonstration Report

Closing date:
31 December, 2016

This report represents one of the nine projects taken through to the demonstration phase of WRAP’s Driving Innovation in Anaerobic Digestion (DIAD) programme.  It was selected as it represented a technological innovation that could optimise and improve AD systems in the UK, making them more efficient and/or cost effective

Community by design planned and delivered a micro AD network in the centre of London. By accepting and treating locally sourced food waste they were able to identify the inherent challenges and opportunities facing localised, urban organic waste management.

The demonstration assessed several micro AD systems, each with different digester capacities, equipment configurations and gas applications. It in turn provided valuable information for evaluating and comparing the long-term economic, energy and technical performances of a micro AD network. Recommendations for future system developments also formed a key theme.
