Clothing longevity - measuring active use

Improving our understanding of how long people keep and regularly wear their clothes for.

Extending the useful life of clothes is a key action area of the SCAP 2020 Commitment - helping to reduce the carbon, waste and water footprints of clothing. This research establishes a baseline figure for active use of clothing from which future changes can be measured.

Key findings

The survey found the average active use of clothing is 3.3 years. This is an average across all types of clothing measured in the survey, across six different purposes for wearing.

The research was conducted via an online survey (through the Ipsos MORI) and, in total, 3,244 panellists completed the survey.
