Bulky Waste Re-use Partners in Lancaster

In 2011 Furniture Matters achieved a sector-leading 50% re-use rate for the bulky waste collection service it runs on behalf of Lancaster City Council.

The service dates back to 2006, when the charity and the council entered into a service level agreement (SLA) to provide collections to the council’s 58,000 households.

The SLA came about as a result of Lancaster City Council’s vision for a service that met its aspirations, including working with a third sector partner, achieving a re-use and recycling rate of at least 40%, and providing a source of electrical items and furniture for local people on low incomes.

The partnership’s objectives are being met as the service prioritises re-use of bulky waste items while providing excellent customer service. Over 70% of collections are made within three working days of booking, as against the SLA standard of five.

Key to the partnership’s success has been the service’s built-in flexibility – offering collections from inside properties, and out-of-hours and Saturday collection times. The service allows Furniture Matters to provide wider benefits, including volunteering opportunities and work experience to local people.
