Brownfield case study - Polkemmet

Years of deep and open cast mining operations at Heartlands Polkemmet have left the site devoid of soil, with more than four million cubic metres of colliery waste and in desperate need of restoration. The aim of the reclamation scheme is to transform the 470 hectare former opencast coalmine into two championship golf courses, leisure facilities and residential housing.

The trials using compost at the site demonstrate that manufacturing topsoil using a mixture of colliery shale and quality compost provides ideal growing conditions for golf course turf while being significantly cost efficient.
