Brownfield case study - Lambton

The former Lambton Cokeworks, near Chester-Le-Street, County Durham has a history of heavy mining and coke manufacture, which left the site contaminated and in need of remediation. The 60ha site was earmarked for redevelopment to include 350 new houses, woodland and open grassland.

Significant landscape restoration of the site needed to occur, involving initial soil remediation of the existing topsoil and decontamination of the site. Small scale trials between August and September 2005 showed that BSI PAS 100 quality compost was a suitable organic amendment to mix with available mineral soil forming materials to manufacture appropriate topsoils. This allowed the developers to save on the costs normally associated with the import of topsoil and export of contaminated materials from the site.
