Brownfield case study - Ebbw Vale

The Corus Ebbw Vale Tinplate works were decommissioned and demolished in 2004. Substantial site clearance, remediation and re-engineering works have subsequently stabilised the site ahead of final landscaping.

The site was completely bare of any natural topsoil, and so a soils strategy was developed to create a suitable mix for landscaping. This involved using the available quantities of industrial spoils as soil-forming materials, in combination with quality compost and sewage sludge. A pot trial to assess nine different soil treatments was undertaken before incorporating the manufactured soils into fields in late Autumn 2007. Monitoring of this project is on-going.
